Friends of the Pacific Foundation

Achievements

So far the FPF Model has achieved the following:
  • Lautoka Hospital facilities have been upgraded. This has included a new surgical theatre, refurbishment of the O&G Theatre, racking provided to the Stores, 2 extra storage facilities donated for excess storage and a workshop for maintenance.

  • Provision of 10 containers of medical supplies – 8 to Lautoka Hospital, 1 to Samabula Health Center and 1 to Ba Mission Hospital. The register of inventory is with each Hospital.

  • The local structure for the Coordination function is being put in place in consultation with the MOH.

  • Establishment of a web-based system where volunteer medical personnel can register their services and a roster developed in conjunction with the Fijian MOH to provide much needed expertise which is not available in Fiji. We are in the process of putting in place policies, procedures and other logistical arrangements.

  • FPF organized a “scoping mission” with Waikato Pathlab Limited who had expressed a desire to offer their expertise and training to dramatically improve the pathology services in Fiji.  Pathlab has the Waikato DHB contract, the Bay of Plenty DHB contract and employs over 500 staff.  It processes in excess of 3,000 patient tests per day.

  • Mrs Dianne McQueen (CEO) and Mr Claudio Turilli (GM) visited Fiji from the 15th to 18th November 2011. They immediately took action with the supply of much needed consumables. They are now implementing a plan on how they can assist with the immediate, short, medium and long term needs of MOH lab services.

  • A Bio-med engineer Mr. Neil Ashton, has visited Lautoka and Nadi Hospitals in Fiji to assess the Bio-med needs and has developed a list of equipment that FPF could assist with. He has led the setting up a workshop that meets current Bio-med standards for Bio-med and general  repair work of medical equipment

  • Continuation of the shipment of medical supplies and equipment as they become available.

  • Upgrading of Hospital facilities as funding and sponsorship becomes available. We are targeting Lautoka Hospital ICU unit so that more surgeries can be carried out whilst the large medical missions are there.

  • Coordination of a shipment of the medical supplies from Medshare USA. This also involved an upgrade of the stores at Lautoka Hospital and the use of 2 warehouses donated to Lautoka Hospital by the Punja family.

  • Coordination of School Furniture to Fiji & Pacific Islands with partnership with All Hearts New Zealand.

  • Coordination of Volunteer Pathologist & Forensic Pathologist for Teaching & Services with Fiji National University and ministry of health.
